New Music Monday – Moon Hooch Edition

If I told you that two saxophonists and a drummer from a jazz program in New York City put on one of the best live performances I’ve seen in the last decade, you’d probably give me a healthy dose of side eye. If I then told you that their music was a mix of jazz, EDM and progressive rock all tied together with complex sampling tech, you would ask me to get off your porch and stop bothering you about Moon Hooch.

Serh and I caught these guys about a year ago at Tipatina’s where they were opening for Mike Doughty’s re-vamped Soul Coughing tour. Moon Hooch ended up blowing the doors off of the building. We were enjoying the show, getting interested in the music, then it happened. They dropped a ridiculous dub step bass line one saxophone. For a moment I feared that we were hearing the elusive brown note. That shit dropped LOW. I could actually see Seth’s mind being blown, and mine was blown as well.

This music isn’t for everyone, but if you see them live, it will be music for you. They’re playing Hogs for the Cause on March 27th.

I'm a married dad with an 11 year-old daughter living in New Orleans. My No. 1 love is movies. But I also play video games with my kid and watch a lot of TV. For the past year I've been sharing New Music Mondays with Cleveland and Seth. I buy at least one song a week of something that is current. I never want to be THAT guy, "Back in my day, we had real rock and roll*." *puts on Reckoning to try and prove point. I've been telling Dad Jokes since I was 15.
